Office makeup has one job: hold up under overhead lighting for nine hours without anyone consciously noticing it. That means matte where you would normally glow, and definition where you would normally reach for colour.
Everything here is one shade away from your own face. The polish comes from the edges being clean, not from the shades being interesting.
What you will need
- Medium-coverage foundation
- Concealer one shade lighter than your base
- Translucent setting powder
- A taupe matte shadow
- A brow pencil and a spoolie
- A rosy nude lipstick
No specific brands. Any version of each will behave the same way.
Even the base, then set the middle
Work medium-coverage foundation from the centre of the face outward, so the coverage fades naturally at the hairline and jaw instead of stopping at an edge.
Powder only the centre panel, the forehead, nose and chin. Leaving the outer cheeks unpowdered keeps the skin looking like skin under fluorescent light.
Tip
Press powder in rather than sweeping it. Sweeping moves your foundation around and creates the patchy look you were trying to avoid.
Brighten under the eye in a triangle
Place concealer in a narrow triangle pointing down toward your cheekbone rather than in a half-moon hugging the lash line.
The triangle lifts the whole midface, and keeping the product away from the crease under your eye means it will not gather there by mid-afternoon.
Tip
Less than you think, then set with the finest powder you own. Under-eye creasing is nearly always a volume problem.
Groom the brows properly
Brush the hairs upward and outward first, then fill only the sparse spots with short pencil strokes that follow the direction the hair grows.
A defined brow is the single strongest signal of a put-together face, and it reads as grooming rather than makeup.
Tip
Fill the tail before the front. Heavy fronts age a brow instantly and are the first thing that looks drawn-on in photos.
One matte taupe wash
Sweep a taupe matte shadow through the crease and blend upward until there is no visible edge, then take a little along the outer third of the lower lash line.
That is the entire eye. The taupe reads as depth rather than colour, which is exactly what you want in a meeting.
Tip
Choose a taupe with a grey undertone rather than a warm brown. Warm browns can read as tired under cool office lighting.
Soft lash line and a rosy nude
Smudge a brown pencil into the roots of your upper lashes so the lash line looks dense rather than lined, then one coat of mascara.
Finish with a rosy nude lip in a satin finish, which stays comfortable through coffee and does not need a mirror to reapply.
Tip
Blot the lipstick once and reapply. The second layer is what survives the morning.

Common questions
Overhead light flattens everything, so add back a little warmth low on the cheek and keep some sheen on the outer cheekbone. Fully matte skin under fluorescents is what reads as tired.
Not inherently, but it changes the maths. If you wear a strong lip, pull the eye right back to a single matte wash so only one feature is speaking.
Set the centre panel, carry a folded blotting paper rather than more powder, and reapply lip only. Adding powder over shine at 3pm is what creates the cakey look.
