This is old Hollywood arithmetic: a flawless base, a defined eye, and a red lip doing the heavy lifting. It has survived a hundred years because the proportions are correct.
The one rule is that the lip wins. Everything on the eye is there to give the face structure, not to compete with the mouth.
What you will need
- Full-coverage foundation and a damp sponge
- Cream and powder contour
- A warm neutral shadow palette
- Black gel liner
- Strip or cluster lashes
- A true red lipstick and a matching liner
No specific brands. Any version of each will behave the same way.
Build a genuinely flawless base
Prime, then build full-coverage foundation with a damp sponge in thin passes, pressing rather than dragging so the texture stays smooth.
Conceal, then set with a light bake under the eyes and along the jaw. This is the one look where a fully finished base is worth the time.
Tip
Press with a damp sponge. Dragging with a brush is what leaves streaks visible in flash photography.
Sculpt with cream, set with powder
Cream contour under the cheekbone, along the temples and under the jaw, blended upward and back toward the ear.
Set with a powder contour in the same places so the structure survives the night, then highlight the cheekbone and the bridge of the nose.
Tip
Cream first, powder second, always in that order. Powder over unset cream will slide; cream over powder will lift the powder off.
A warm neutral eye with real depth
Transition shade above the crease, a warm mid-tone through the crease itself, and a deep shade pressed into the outer V.
Add a champagne shimmer to the centre of the lid and the inner corner so there is a bright point for the light to catch.
Tip
Keep the eye warm and neutral rather than colourful. A red lip and a coloured eye fight each other every time.
Sharp liner and full lashes
Draw a defined wing in black gel, thicker than you would for daytime, and connect it cleanly to a set of strip or cluster lashes.
Let the glue tack up for thirty seconds before the lash touches your lid, and press the band down into the liner so no gap shows.
Tip
Trim the strip to your own eye width and apply it from the outer corner inward. Most lash bands are cut for a wider eye than yours.
The red lip, properly
Line the lips starting at the cupid's bow, correcting the shape slightly if you want to, then fill the entire lip with the liner before any lipstick.
Apply the red with a brush for a clean edge, blot, dust with translucent powder through a tissue, and apply a second coat.
Tip
Lining and filling with pencil first is what stops a red bleeding. It doubles the wear time and gives the lipstick something to grip.

Common questions
Match the undertone rather than the depth. Cool blue-reds flatter pink undertones, warm orange-reds flatter golden ones, and a true neutral red works on almost everyone.

Absolutely. Curl hard, use a tubing mascara, and add three or four small clusters at the outer corner if you want more. The red lip is the load-bearing element anyway.
