After a decade of colour, the nineties went the other way entirely: matte, muted, and almost aggressively neutral. This is the supermodel-and-grunge palette, all browns and beiges.
It is five steps and almost no colour decisions, which is why it still works as an everyday face thirty years later.
What you will need
- Foundation matched exactly to your skin
- Translucent setting powder
- A matte taupe-brown shadow
- A brown eye pencil
- A brown lip liner and a brown-nude lipstick
No specific brands. Any version of each will behave the same way.
Keep the skin matte and exactly your shade
Pick a foundation that disappears into your skin rather than brightening or warming it, and apply just enough to even things out.
Set everything with translucent powder so the finish is completely shine-free. Velvet, not glass.
Tip
Skip highlighter entirely. The flat finish is what makes the browns on top read as authentically nineties rather than just neutral.
Fake a slimmer brow
Brush the brows up, then run a little concealer along the top and bottom edges to visually narrow the shape into a thinner line.
Fill any gaps lightly so the brow still reads as tidy and intentional, just slimmer than your natural shape.
Tip
Concealer instead of tweezers means you can wash this off tonight and still have your full brows tomorrow.
Smudge a matte brown eye
Sweep a soft taupe-brown across the lid and blend a deeper brown through the crease so there is depth without any shimmer.
Smudge the same brown along the lower lash line with a fingertip for that lived-in, slightly undone finish.

Matte browns only. A single shimmer pulls this straight into a different decade.
Line and fill the signature lip
Line right on your natural edge with a brown liner, keeping the line visible rather than hidden. The visible liner is the point.
Fill with a matte brown-nude a shade lighter than the liner, then blot for a stained rather than glossy finish.
Tip
Pick a brown with a hint of your own lip tone in it. A brown that is too grey can read as unwell on many skin tones.
A low, dusty blush
Choose a muted brown-pink and place it low and slightly back on the cheek, closer to the ear than the apple.
Build it slowly. It should barely register on its own and simply tie the browns together into one cohesive face.
Tip
Dusty rose or soft terracotta reads far more nineties than a bright pink. When unsure, use less.
